Vegetarian vampires
So, vegetarians don't eat meat. But some will eat milk/eggs. The reason being that they can be produced without harming the animal concerned.

So... what about blood? I mean, I give blood quite often, and am still alive. And there's like, tribes in africa that mix blood and milk from their cattle, because the cows themselves are too valuable to kill for their meat...

Does that mean that technically all the blood collected by the NHS is 'veggie friendly'? And thus mean that you could, in fact, have a vegetarian vampire (duck)?

Milk is an interesting one... it requires calves as well as cows. And approximately 50% of those calves are the wrong gender to produce more milk. In many cases, they're also the wrong breed to grow to adulthood for beef. And veal has pretty much vanished from British supermarkets...

As I understand it, this means that a lot of male calves are killed almost immediately.

More likely exported to the continent, if The F Word is to believed.

As for the thing in the OP, as a vegetarian myself I would likely avoid blood. I don't have any particular ethical spin on it, I just wouldn't. Then again, I've known omnivores who tend to avoid Black Pudding once they know what goes into it. Partially the fault of the education system as it appears to no longer include teaching people where the food they eat comes from.

This is the difference between vegetarians and vegans is it not, where vegans want nothing to do with consuming animals AND their produce as opposed to vegetarians who just don't eat animals that eat vegetables? So I guess to answer your question, technically blood is vegetarian but not vegan friendly.

There are vegitarian vampires in New York

I went to a vampire club when I was visiting where a lot of guys were vegetarians and only drank the blood other vegetarians. If that makes any sense.

Re: There are vegitarian vampires in New York

I'm not sure it does - eating only vegetables doesn't mean a cow is a vegetable. Unless it's for the sake of the flavour - I understand the reason we don't typically eat carnivores is because the digestion of meat leads to a quite unpleasant flavour. Apparantly this property extends to other bodily fluids such as blood.

Wh9ich would make sense. But the rationale of only vegetarian blood is vegetarian much less so.
