Following the river downstream. - Ed's journal

Following the river downstream.
One does not blame the river, for how it flows.
One merely swims or drifts or drowns.
But the river doesn't care.

One cannot blame the river for where it leads.
The river flows where it will, you're just along for the ride.
But still the river does not care.

Gulfoss

Wilderness tapers into wilderness, punctuated
occasionally by red posts. No more signs:
language exists dimly here, in the small air bubbles
of a large molten loaf.
At midday, the sun peers over to watch:
two limbs of the same creature,
Siamese twins joined only in battle.
A tourist centre crouches a good two miles away;
will not creep closer.
To watch them
is to watch flecked footage
of gladiators on the moon. The sound,
a constant spilling, ticking away
like scratches on vinyl, removes the listener
to obscurity. Frustrated,
in their fury, they slash at the mother river; mutilate her.
The gush never clots or thickens, even in winter -
cannot be captured or bottled.
And then there is the deep bottom;
a bruised pit that hides itself
beneath the suffocating mass of sulphur-water.
