"Can I borrow some coffee"
Phrase for today: "Can I borrow some coffee".

NO. YOU ABSOLUTELY CANNOT.

Never. Ever. Are YOU. OR ANYONE ELSE allowed to BORROW my coffee.

GO AWAY.

You can HAVE some coffee. You can drink it all up. Leave me a bit, and I'm very happy. But there is NO WAY IN HELL I ever want that coffee to be returned. Even the thought about ways in which it could be returned, fill me with horror. I mean, liquid form, after biological processing? Or do the granules survive sufficiently intact to be solid form, like 'weasel' coffee?

No. YOU CANNOT BORROW MY COFFEE.

*ahem*.

It seems to be Friday.

They could give back different coffee in exchange?

Customer: Could I borrow some money?
Bank Manager: No, you absolutely cannot. What are you going to do, spend it and then run around the economy trying to recover exactly the same banknotes?

(Yes, I'm just being argumentative now.)

Money is not a tangible object. Banknotes are merely promissaries. Therefore it is entirely possible to return 'money' even if you've bought a car with it.

COffee on the other hand, is coffee. I don't want it back. Although I will accept some replacement coffee.

Tsk! Although incorrect do you admit that "borrow" sounds a bit nicer than "have", "take", "consume" etc. all of which are correct but sound a litle more forceful? And you're just being pedantic but then again we're all allowed to be :) And yes you could "borrow" some coffee but making someone else fish it out of faeces to prove the point won't get you many friends ;)

I personally think it sounds a bit phoney, a bit like "I hope I'm not interrupting", of course you are, its just a question of how bad your timing was :)
