Bioshock - Ed's journal
Have finished Bioshock.
It's great. It's better than great. If you're anywhere near a fan of the genre (FPS + RPG) then get this game. If you played System Shock 2, and liked it, then you'll like Bioshock as well.

My only real grumble was it was perhaps a little shorter than I liked. And that on 'medium' it took IMO too much ammo to take down the average bad guy, vs. the amount of ammo you had available (clip size, carry capacity, and quantities 'generally available')

Minor grumbles with the plot (or did I miss these?)
Big daddies. What were they? There seems to be a suggestion near the end, that they were people in suits, but ...

And ... you never really get to find out quite what happened to the city, and the splicers and stuff, do you? It looked to me that some stuff had kicked off all at once, but ...

Anyhow, the plot when you get to meet Ryan was cool. The 'Would you kindly' thing was brilliant.

After that, I'm afraid the rest of the storyline just kinda ... well didn't do so well IMO. I was expecting there to be more after that, and vaguely expected what (although, I was expecting something a little more ... well, funky than just a 'oh yeah, I lied to you').

The big boss fight, somehow seemed anti-climatic. Especially as they kinda lined you up and told you 'no more saves or respawns', which seemed ... well, a bit like they _suddenly_ broke immersion.

Looking over all the diary entries near the end the Big Daddys make some sense to me. Suchong needed the little sisters to gather from teh city with protection so developed a "suit" that could be bonded to a "volunteer" to make them incredably tough and strong. Why this process makes then smell I have no idea.

As for what happened, that is fairly easy in my mind. Fontaine recruited himself an army through the poor house, which he fed ADAM and plasmids/tonics in order to make himself an army. On New Year, he sent his army out to attack and try to wrest the city from Ryan. Ryan could only counter this by producing his own similar army. End result, pretty much everyone alive in the city ended up splicing themselves up as much as they could in order to have a chance to survive.

Oh, as for the length of the game, I don't think it's really much shorter then most other FPS games, but it is much more intense and gripping. As such you end up playing it far more then other games and complete it faster. Shame, but I don't feel "cheated". It was well worth the money.
