A nice article, innovatively titled "Wait, Aren't you scared?".… - Ed's journal

A nice article, innovatively titled "Wait, Aren't you scared?". About terrorism, and a 'fear culture' which I mostly agree with.

For those that haven't seen V for Vendetta - and you should, because it's good, despite the purists saying it's not the same as the comic book, it's one fine film - there's similarities in premise. Put simply, that a government has more control, more power if the population are living in perpetual fear.

They get to put in ID cards, and cameras on the streets, and cameras that track your car so they know where you're going, and maybe logging on cellphone base stations so they know your movements. Perhaps even holding people without a trial entirely, for a month or more. And as the 'essential liberties' disappear in the name 'anti terrorism' we get gradually closer to a police state.

Democracy is really one of the worst forms of government, after all. Well, apart from all the other ones. Dictatorships are far more efficient. It's just then you have to trust the person at the top to do the right thing...

the problem with dictatorships is the individual in charge is a human and humans are shit. I would therefore suggest somekind of computer.
